The oncology section offers a comprehensive service for the diagnosis and monitoring of acquired chromosome abnormalities from bone marrow, leukaemic blood, solid tumour, lymph node and paraffin embedded tissue.
The oncology team consists of experienced and energetic cytogeneticists who liaise closely with clinical haematologists and anatomic pathologists. Both diagnostic and follow-up samples are processed, generally by conventional chromosome analysis and FISH. Array CGH is also available for selected cases after consultation with the laboratory. Appropriate samples for follow-up include CML, relapsed cases, acute leukaemias or to monitor the status of referrals initially found to have a cytogenetic abnormality.

Haematological malignancies:
Bone Marrow aspirate. Blood Samples are preferred for CLL patients with peripheral lymphocytosis. For other disorders, peripheral blood is suitable if there are sufficient blasts in circulation2-10 ml bone marrow / whole blood in a lithium heparin (LH) tube(green top) Solid Tumours and Lymph Nodes: Biopsies should be obtained under sterile conditions and transported in sterile tissue culture media, which is available from this laboratory on request. |
4 days for urgent samples. 6 days for routine samples. 18 days for solid tumours and 7 days for lymph nodes |
FISH | $533 |
Haematological neoplasms:
FISH is generally performed on fixed cell preparations. Therefore, if conventional cytogenetics is being performed, in most cases there will be no additional specimen requirements. If conventional cytogenetics is not to be performed, please send 2-5 ml of whole blood / bone marrow in a LH tube.Paraffin Embedded Tissues (PETs): 2-4 µm sections are required for FISH analysis. A H&E slide should accompany the sections with the region of interest indicated. |
3 days for both urgent and routine samples. |
