Wellington Regional Genetics Laboratory (WRGL) is an IANZ accredited laboratory contracted to provide comprehensive genetic testing services to an extensive region of New Zealand including central region DHBs, Taranaki and Nelson Marlborough through the Crown Funding Agreement. This laboratory has also established in-source partnerships with provider laboratories in Otago / Southland and Waikato. State of the art technology coupled with dedicated and experienced scientific staff ensures timely and accurate diagnostic results. The laboratory currently processes approximately 12,000 tests per annum and continues to offer an ever expanding repertoire of tests.
Conventional classical chromosome analysis supplemented with Fluorescent in situ Hybridisation (FISH) technology has been the mainstay of diagnostic cytogenetic testing for many years. WRGL was one of the first laboratories in Australasia to embrace and introduce Microarray diagnostic testing for constitutional analysis. Microarrays is now considered the diagnostic platform of choice for the investigation of intellectual disability and developmental delay in children. This powerful technology allows us to interrogate the whole genome with unparalleled resolution allowing the detection of sub-microscopic abnormalities. There has been a gradual increase in the number of molecular genetic tests available at WRGL, with the most recent additions being testing for a range of repeat expansion neurogenetic disorders and the introduction of a next-generation sequencing (NGS) test for a number of mutation hotspots in genes associated with cancer. |
